ASH WEDNESDAY - Isaiah 58:1-12; 2 Corinthians 5:20b-6:10; Matthew 6:1-6, 16-21

Lent is traditionally a time of almsgiving, prayer, and fasting. If we do these spiritual disciplines merely to tick items off our To Do List for Lent, we miss the opportunity for personal reflection, not in judgment but in examination. The confession in the Book of Common Prayer says, “We have erred and strayed from [God’s] ways like lost sheep. We have trusted too much in the devices and desires of our own hearts.” Whether you give up or take on something new, use it to think about how closely you reflect the self-denial, sacrifice, and service to others of Jesus which is expected of us.
