The traditional way of reading the Hebrew Bible/Old Testament as a Christian is to read it through the lens of Jesus Christ. However, doing so can cause us to imagine the ancient writings to be specifically about Jesus when they are not. What we can see, though, is that much of what was written about God in the various experiences of the Israelites in the centuries before Jesus is retained and reflected in what Jesus said and did. In this sermon, Rev Derwyn described how what was said in Isaiah 42 some five hundred years before Jesus can be seen to connect with the account of his baptism in Matthew 3. Furthermore, Jesus can be seen to act in accordance with the wisdom talked about it the Hebrew Bible and we are challenged to follow in his footsteps as we endeavour to live similarly wise lives.
