No, seriously.
The writer of the Gospel of Matthew meant well in his efforts to present Jesus as model Jew, the Messiah, and a second Moses to his Jewish audience, but he overstated his case in many places, especially the last two sentences in this passage in chapter 18. In this sermon, Rev Derwyn explains how it is that Matthew could record that Jesus threatened Christians with torment for failing to forgive their brothers (and sisters) who sin against them. Here's a hint: Jesus didn't actually say this, but Matthew is convinced it's the kind of thing he surely would have said . . .
