Pierre Teilhard de Chardin faced challenges from his Jesuit order and from the Catholic Church as a whole in the first half of the twentieth century due to his embrace of evolution. How he maintained a positive approach to his search for truth in both theological and scientific terms can be described in part by his practice of what may be called a "Thanksgiving Examen." This practice provides us with a hands-on example of the exhortation given in the first letter to Timothy, which encourages supplications, prayer, intercessions and thanksgivings be made for everyone . . . even those who put pressure on us.
