EPIPHANY 3 - 1 Corinthians 1:18-31; Matthew 5:1-20

After Jesus's baptism and time of testing in the wilderness, he returned north to Nazareth and then made his home in Capernaum to begin his ministry. In the Gospel of Matthew, after having started to preach and to heal people, and after selecting his first four disciples, Jesus goes up on a mountain to deliver what is known as the "Sermon on the Mount" (Matthew 5-7). What he says and who he says it to plays an important part in knowing what to do with these three chapters in the gospel.
